Susimail without I2P Java

Post by raccoondad »

I use I2P on a laptop, because of this I use external routers running I2Pd and then just port forward

This works fine, but I can't use Susimail since there isn't a standalone

My only real solution I could find is running a temporary router on my laptop to access Susimail and then shutting down the router. I would like to just use the router I already have up and integrated, but its running I2Pd

Any solutions?

There are several possibilities. It should be possible to set the Java Router so that I2Pd does the routing. Unfortunately I already forgot where I read that. Secondly, I2Pmail behaves like any other email system, quote: "I2Pmail is more a service than an application - postman offers both internal and external email with POP3 and SMTP service through I2PTunnel instances accessing a series of components developed with mastiejaner, allowing people to use their preferred mail clients to send and receive mail pseudonymously." [fn:1] If an email client such as Mutt is used, then that client can be set to pull out telltale data before sending, and use "folder-hook" to target different accounts. Finally, with programs like "fetchmail" the mail is fetched from Postman and sorted with "procmail". This is as cumbersome as it sounds but it works.

What I used to do, but I hate configuring it and Susimail was just a much better experience than other mail clients with I2P

Email is a meme protocol in general but I just found it to be a headache

Susimail just worked, no configuration needed

You can try this, it works for me.
Disable everything except Susimail in I2P Java, disable i2cp in I2Pd, open I2Pd first.

The I2P Client Protocol (I2CP) exposes a strong separation of concerns between the router and any client that wishes to communicate over the network.

Thanks for the hint. I will change the default port to avoid a conflict rather than disable it.

These special solutions for special purposes do not lead to the goal, because most of the participants cannot understand it. In other words, it is too complicated for the general public.
According to the I2P homepage SusiMail is an integral part of I2P. With the further development and/or the porting of Java I2P on other programming languages logically also the SusiMail should be able to be used independently of the Java Router Console, like MuWire, I2PSnark, BiglyBT, and the like. SusiMail was also programmed in Java and Java is supposed to be platform independent. But maybe the Java group wants to be ahead of the competition with this unique selling point, since I2Pd has been around for a few years now.
Responsible for the development and organization of SusiMail and the I2P email system are "idk" and "postman". So these two are the right contact persons. Therefore this "official" request, if a standalone version of SusiMail is planned and when to expect it, was exactly the right way.
However, this is a secondary medium that I2P developers ignore whenever possible. For ordinary people, the public seems to be the right place to get answers to important questions. And this public is especially the U.S. company Reddit. The I2P site there is much better maintained, has a search function in contrast to the I2P homepage, and those seeking help have a 24/7 coach at their disposal.
