Please help test I2P for Android 0.9.47-1

Post by eyedeekay »

A large group of bugs on the Android releases shared a single cause, which was an undocumented and misconfigured BOOTCLASSPATH. The bugs would severely impair the usability of I2P for Android. A new release was cut after this issue was resolved, and it's available through the main release channels:

Google Play - https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... 2p.android
Selfhosted F-Droid - https://f-droid.i2p.io/
Freestanding APK - https://download.i2p2.de/android/current/app.apk

If you have a debug build, or are switching from one release channel to another, you will need to completely uninstall and reinstall the I2P application. Most users will simply be able to update the application normally.

I really need to hear your feedback! Android is one of the most widely used operating systems in the world, possibly the most widely used operating system in the world, with billions of devices out there that could potentially participate in the I2P network, providing people access to resources anonymously on their mobiles.

I don't know who else noticed, but *also* about:config is removed in new mobile Firefoxes(The Fenix based ones). That pushes an already irritating browser configuration process firmly into the "Impossible" territory. At least for about:config based setups.

Not having a Firefox for Android users to use with I2P wasn't acceptable. The last remaining option is to configure it with a WebExtension. But Mozilla cut most of the extensions off from mainline Firefox unless you go through the elaborate process of adding a custom collection to Fenix Nightly(https://blog.mozilla.org/addons/2020/09/29/expa...). That procedure is only marginally less bad than about:config. But there is a fork, IceRaven, which exists for the express purpose of pre-configuring a collection of extensions. In the short term, IceRaven may be the easiest-to-configure browser for using with I2P for Android.

So I took my Chrome extension, made it compatible with Firefox, and requested it be added to the IceRaven fork's approved addon collection. https://github.com/fork-maintainers/iceraven-br... The `I2P Proxy for Android and Other` extension will be visible in the default extension collection. It will configure the HTTP proxy, anti-fingeprinting, and webRTC obedience in one click.

I'm pretty sure about:config will soon be back in Firefox for Android, since it's already back in the Nightlies.
