Request for Comments: I2P Style Guide

As part of an OTF-Funded design project which concluded this summer, an I2P style guide was produced, containing several recommendations for how we should consider changing the look and feel of I2P in the future. For the time being, these are mostly still Recommendations! We need input from the community now, feedback on the recommendations. What do you like? What do you dislike? Is there anything you must have, or something you find particularly objectionable? Please let us know!

To visit the style guide, go here: https://uracreative.github.io/i2p-styleguide/

Please ask questions about this project in this thread! I'll be checking in regularly.

Is the opinion poll still running or have the dice already been cast?

In my research, I have found how widely scattered and complex the subject seems to be, and largely met with disapproval. I withdraw my question.

Yes it does seem to be complex and create controversy, but to answer your question right now, in the absence of much feedback, I treat it as a color-picker. The logos were too similar to logos of other organizations to be used, one of them in particular looks just like Ubisoft. Any usage of these guidelines has been pretty relaxed, except for the color palette.

As for the I2P logo, the three differently sized circles stuffed into each other on the helve leave me perplexed. The logo's lettering is noticeably round and soft and apparently doesn't want to offend anyone. I would expect this in a nursery or toy store, it seems like a misplaced combination of rattle and cuddly blanket. In my opinion, a serious safety net needs something that also expresses security and stability and at the same time reflects competence and seriousness. I would also put the name of the project in the foreground in order to steer interpretations in the right direction right from the start and thus nip any expected derogatory associations in the bud.

My draft with only minor changes and consistent implementation of the simple rules of typography. The abbreviation "I2P" is established by now, I made a rock out of it. For direct comparison I made the changes to the I2P homepage and attached them as an image.

Edit: Well, dumb luck, 146 KiB are too much as attachment apparently, although the attachment is shown as accepted.

According to the club page, there is actually someone who is actively responsible for the maintenance of the homepage. I myself can not understand why it takes years to clean up his room, my weakness, I lack the patience, but it is not my room. If you are interested in my participation you are welcome to contact me. I wish you good luck and success.

The person listed as the website maintainer is me and the reason it takes me so long to make changes is because if there is a task that needs done, I offer to pick it up. That's how I ended up having 12 jobs on that page. I have maybe another 20 or so jobs that aren't on that page. I'd love to have more help on the website, especially from someone who can actually write the code/markup instead of just telling me what I'm doing wrong. The website is available as a public git repository on https://i2pgit.org/i2p-hackers/i2p.www and https://github.com/i2p/i2p.www. File issues, make MRs or PRs, I'll review them and merge them onto the site.

Oh you are the one, that's interesting. That's how it is with all the names we give ourselves. Something funny comes to mind, the boss of the local pirates was complaining the other day about people not using their real alias. :-)

Let's keep it simple. I2P is not capable of running on its own, as far as development is concerned. Although everyone knows that the platforms you use are monitored, you send everyone involved as well as potentially interested parties there. Whether this is intentional or unintentional is of no further interest at the moment; it is the company's policy, as I have already noted elsewhere.

For the design of the website you have to find someone who accepts you as his boss and explains the basics to you in an understandable way, so that you are in a positive mood and inclined to look at the work in the first place. Otherwise, the person has invested his time in vain, like me, for example.

In the few days since I've been here, the topic has been viewed 275 times, and there are a total of 17 views a day. Maybe they are not all just curious, maybe there is someone among them who meets the criteria as an assistant? Please contact them without obligation, also in IRC, where a strong community of up to 52 developers are present every day.

Enough for today, after all it's the weekend ;-)
