Monotone guidelines, tips, hints

Post by echelon »

Hi

just a copy & paste:
- don't ever try to fix something by dropping and re-adding a file
- when you remove and re-add a file, all the history is lost
- don't do a zillion propagates
- don't propagate from another branch short time before checkin deadline
- don't checkin your own -xx EXTRA string in RouterVersion

Thanks. I was planning to do a write up on Monotone. I haven't used this anywhere else and there are little to no guides online for Monotone. The Monotone manual is pretty much all there is and for someone who is used to other source control systems (which I think would be pretty much everyone) Monotone can have unexpected behavior relative to other systems. I'm glad that I've made mistakes with files of (relatively) lower importance instead of with more important files - some mistakes/unexpected behavior are to be expected and, given the lack of any guides other than the manual, the negative impacts would be minimized. I will return to this post and add in more details about my experiences with Monotone so far and what I have learned.
